Last night I took my sister out for a wine and dessert after we had some yummy home-made pizzas for dinner. It’s her birthday on Monday and unfortunately I wont be down with her still, so we celebrated a little early!

My lovely mama gave me some money so I could take her out as the ever frustrating Studylink has mucked up yet another persons pay…me!! But thats a whole other rant…

We went to gorgeous restaurant and cafe called Waimea which is in Waikanae. Its a converted house, so it has a very relaxing feeling as soon as you walk in, just like you’ve gone round to a mates place for dinner. Its got a funky retro decor and beautiful palm trees in it which give a cool beach vibe. Not to sound weird tho, my favourite room was the toilet. I’ll show you why…

image

Hows that for kiwi ingenuity!! I LOVE this sink idea! Probably wouldnt work too well in a house situation, imagine trying to fill that bucket up and wash your face! It is done so well though, theres a drain that emptys the bucket and runs through the cinder blocks. And the toilet roll holder…well, that speaks for itself!

This was the Whittakers Chocolate Ganache slice with white chocolate and strawberries soaked in Pinot Noir that I had for pudding. It. Was. Heavenly. All the components worked so well together, rich decadent  chocolate with fresh moist strawberries that have a deep wine after taste…amazing.

If your in the area, Id definitely recommend you pop in for a meal! Happy Mothers Day to all the mamas out there. Hope you’ve had a great weekend, until next time.

Fish! You either love it or hate it. Luckily for me I love it, and thank goodness seeing as the two favourite men in my life  (Dad and Kieran) are both great fishermen!!
Kieran caught this snapper in weekend and I was out the night he cooked it up, so being the lovely boy he is, he saved me some.

Im always a bit skeptical about trying something new with fish, just because I love the natural basic flavour of it so much and I kinda think if something aint broke, dont fix it, right?! But…

Some times things do get a bit boring however, and because I love Asian flavours so much I thought Id do a new take on the fish for a change!

And am bouy am I glad I did!! (See what I did there?!?) Check out this sexy piece if fish… (if fish could be sexy, this is what naughty fish mens magazines would look like)

Mint is everywhere at the moment!! Everyones blog has some reference to it, whether it be in fashion for the home or body – and I love it! Its such a lovely colour that goes with loads of others, including my fav…Tan!

I recently bought this delicious jumper/shrug/cardi thing, that I feel has completed my in-between wardrobe. You know the one, where youre warm, but still a bit cool, but too hot for a proper jumper..confusing!! This ‘thing’ is perfect, and what I love about it is that its actually like wearing a blanket! You can snuggle up on the couch with it, wrap it around your self and thoroughly enjoy that cuppa tea you just made yourself!

What do you think of the tan and mint combo?

For my mani I used Orly “Girly” & Ruby “Minty” … opps, just realied that I took my OPI “Princesses Rule!” In the photo! They literally have the same effect so you could use either. My sister got me the Minty for my birthday, I love it!!

True to my new goal of sharing fabulous blogs with you all, here is my pick of cool blog  (click here), where the creator Laurel has chosen some fab fashion items that are all, you guessed it – Mint!!

One thing I love about food is how it can bring back memorable moments or happy times when you might have eaten it previously. The breakfast I made this morning did just that for me, and I was transported back to my good friend Lucys wedding, where she had a morning wedding and these delicious treats were served (actually, hers were ALOT better as they were made from Brioche and just deeeevine!!)

I found the recipe among one of my many blog trawls on another really really cool blog called Sugar and Charm – check it out!

I dont know about you, but I am surrounded by creative people that are constantly inspiring me. For about a year now Ive been battling with the desire to start my own custom design art and furniture company with my dad. We have always talked about it, but it always seemed like a dream, something that probably wouldnt eventuate into anything. Mostly because being a poor student I can never really get enough money together to make any really good prototypes, nor can I find the time!! Dont ask why…. its not even like I work alot!!
Excuses, excuses….

But no more!! I find inspiration at the randomest times (like driving home after dinner at my girlfriends last night), & thought I reeeeeeeally need to make this!! (“This” being something you will have to wait and see what!!)

So, this is me being proactive and getting off my lazy butt and using the time I do have productively! Lets hope it lasts…

Ive just got home from one of my faaaaaav shops – Bunnings Warehouse! Yes, feel free to laugh, but this place is a DIY-er’s, craft nerds heaven!! I could spend hours, and hundreds of dollars in that shop, from their nails, to their power tools, to their paint….ohh…  *homer drool….

Er, anyways… I am super excited also about the metallics and special effects paint from Resene – so cool.

I bought ‘infinity’ & ‘goldmine’ and am hopefully going to create a work of art with them!

Ive been feeling very inspired by all the metallic accents that are coming through in the fashion and interior design world at the moment. One thing I find my mind keeps thinking back to is this amazing metallic light shade which Lucy and saw when we were out being inspired on the Urbis Design Day

I just think they are the bees-knees! Online is a treasure trove of motivational madness for me. This morning for instance I came across this neat website which sells awesome homewares (Gretel), and that was through reading someone elses blog (this one: Design Love Fest, is a MUST read). Whenever I am in need of some inspiration, I go for a blog surf and see what sparks of creativness I can summon up!

I cant wait to share my creation with you once it is done, and hopefully I will continue to be motivated and inspired by all the wonderful, creative people I have surrounded myself with. I hope you also have cool creative nerds and supportive peeps that keep you inspired!

After a long weekend doing a whole lot of nothin’, I’m feeling very relaxed and back on top of all the bugs and sickness that have tried to bring me down lately – boom!

My Easter Friday started off working, which being a nanny, to be honest is not a bad way to start a holiday. I took the kids to a special Easter Service at their church, where they had an hour choir practice to start with, so unfortunately I had to find an open cafe and enjoy a nice coffee before going back up to the church and watching the performance of how Jesus ended up on the cross and hearing my kids sing. It was a pretty cool rendition and the kids sounded amazing!

Saturday…. hmmm… do you ever find that when you have a holiday all your days blur into one?? Im pretty sure Kieran and I just hung out at home and didnt do a whole lot! On Sunday afternoon, I do remember that Kieran and I went out fishin with my dad. It was an absolute blast! We havn’t been out on the boat for way too long so was great to get out on the water again with me old man! There was a massive low heading over the land while we we’re out on the sea, and it looked magic looking back at the land which had dark black clouds looming over it:

Kieran was like a fish master, and pretty much everytime he dropped his line the fish jumped on it! Unfortunately they were little bubbas, so we told them to go tell their folks we had good food, and eventually got two keepers – dinner!!

Dad actually took us out for dinner, where I enjoyed a delicious creamy pasta at Ripples, Kieran had an amazing cajun burger and dad had delectable fall-off-the-bone lamb shanks – YUM!

So Monday night we cooked the fish up and I tried a recipe I havnt used before, where you use seasoned cornflour to batter the fish instead of flour. I couldnt really taste a noticable difference, but it was nice and neutral so the fish really stood out. At the end of the recipe it said to put balsamic vinegar in the pan, where youd already put garlic, rosemary and olive oil, and then let it burn off till its reduced to half, and then you add lemon juice. I really didnt find this part of the recipe very good, as it also said to put the garlic into a hot pan, where it just burnt, so it was pretty much a waste. Luckily this didnt ruin the fish (Kieran would have killed me!), so we both thoroughly enjoyed our freshly caught meal!

image

Was really pleased to see that Kieran didnt consume all the fish for dinner, as I bought some yummy wholemeal wraps and made a chocka-block fish wrap for lunch yesterday with the leftovers:

image

I had really wanted to make a parsley dressing, as my parsley is trying to take over my garden, but unfortunately I couldnt get the consistancy I wanted from using my blender or food processor. I decided to brave the Easter sales and see if Briscoes had a smaller hand-held one but all there shelves were bare and the queue was from one end of the shop to the other!

On my dinner plate you can see the little pile of green stuff which is what I made, but what I actually wanted was more of a dressing consistency that would have been runny… oh well, its more of a relish now I guess!

Hope everyone had a great Easter and enjoys a short week this week!

The weekend just gone was certainly one full of two things I love – friends and freebies!! My good friend Lucy and I attended the Urbis Design Day on Saturday just gone, and because we were both Design Day virgins, we both had no idea what to expect. I had been offered some work for the same day in the afternoon and thought surely 2 hours would be enough to get around and explore all that this day had to offer…. luckily the work was cancelled because boy, it took aloooot longer than anticipated, and I certainly wouldnt want to have rushed it!!

We started off the eventful day at the Mini Cooper shop in Newmarket, and was greeted with a free sandwich and drink (darn, wish I hadnt just bought that muffin and coffee!). We explored their creative displays which showcased their minis and brought new light to why each mini is special, and how you might see yourself in them. A great start to the day.

image

We then got shuttled off to the next exhibit at ECC lighting and furniture, where I was in lighting heaven. More pretty, unusual and ginormous lighting than you could shake a stick at! Here they had free Nespresso coffee on offer and the most delicious organic NZ icecream you could ask for – oob!! (I’ll take an extra one for later thanks…)

Now I was all jacked up on my second coffee of the day, off to the next place! We visited a bathroom show room, which aside from the free cheese didnt really standout and offer us anything too exciting, so into the shuttle and onto the next stop – Bo Concept.

This place was fuuuun! They had free wine, George fm cranking live and get this: a section that had a rack of top-of-the-line designer clothes, models, shoes and accessories and you got to design your own photo shoot where a professional photographer then took shots in a little photoshoot and gave you a copy of it!! Heaven!! Aside from the rather pushy stylist that was there (trying) to give direction, it was awesome, and such a brilliant idea.

image

After this one, we went up to Parnell and saw some of David Trubridge’s stunning lighting fixtures, which are always a pleasure to look at. He hails from one of my favourite places in my beautiful country, Havelock North. I love how his designs have such a natural look about them, yet have a really sophisticated and modern effect when dangling from the ceiling. After viewing these at Backhouse, we then jumped on the shuttle again which took us to our next destination where we went through a little maze to figure out what type of font we would be.

image

What font are you?

After so many eye catching and creative displays around, my eyes needed a wee rest after they had been so deliciously stimulated all day! Lucy and I had a wonderful day out together and were both thoroughly surprised at how amazingly well thought out and put together this event was. We would totally recommend it for next year!

P.S. check out Urbis Magazine here, well worth a look!
