The Good Things In Life

image

Last night I took my sister out for a wine and dessert after we had some yummy home-made pizzas for dinner. It’s her birthday on Monday and unfortunately I wont be down with her still, so we celebrated a little early!

My lovely mama gave me some money so I could take her out as the ever frustrating Studylink has mucked up yet another persons pay…me!! But thats a whole other rant…

We went to gorgeous restaurant and cafe called Waimea which is in Waikanae. Its a converted house, so it has a very relaxing feeling as soon as you walk in, just like you’ve gone round to a mates place for dinner. Its got a funky retro decor and beautiful palm trees in it which give a cool beach vibe. Not to sound weird tho, my favourite room was the toilet. I’ll show you why…

image

Hows that for kiwi ingenuity!! I LOVE this sink idea! Probably wouldnt work too well in a house situation, imagine trying to fill that bucket up and wash your face! It is done so well though, theres a drain that emptys the bucket and runs through the cinder blocks. And the toilet roll holder…well, that speaks for itself!

This was the Whittakers Chocolate Ganache slice with white chocolate and strawberries soaked in Pinot Noir that I had for pudding. It. Was. Heavenly. All the components worked so well together, rich decadent  chocolate with fresh moist strawberries that have a deep wine after taste…amazing.

If your in the area, Id definitely recommend you pop in for a meal! Happy Mothers Day to all the mamas out there. Hope you’ve had a great weekend, until next time.

One thing I love about food is how it can bring back memorable moments or happy times when you might have eaten it previously. The breakfast I made this morning did just that for me, and I was transported back to my good friend Lucys wedding, where she had a morning wedding and these delicious treats were served (actually, hers were ALOT better as they were made from Brioche and just deeeevine!!)

I found the recipe among one of my many blog trawls on another really really cool blog called Sugar and Charm – check it out!

I dont know about you, but I am surrounded by creative people that are constantly inspiring me. For about a year now Ive been battling with the desire to start my own custom design art and furniture company with my dad. We have always talked about it, but it always seemed like a dream, something that probably wouldnt eventuate into anything. Mostly because being a poor student I can never really get enough money together to make any really good prototypes, nor can I find the time!! Dont ask why…. its not even like I work alot!!
Excuses, excuses….

But no more!! I find inspiration at the randomest times (like driving home after dinner at my girlfriends last night), & thought I reeeeeeeally need to make this!! (“This” being something you will have to wait and see what!!)

So, this is me being proactive and getting off my lazy butt and using the time I do have productively! Lets hope it lasts…

Ive just got home from one of my faaaaaav shops – Bunnings Warehouse! Yes, feel free to laugh, but this place is a DIY-er’s, craft nerds heaven!! I could spend hours, and hundreds of dollars in that shop, from their nails, to their power tools, to their paint….ohh…  *homer drool….

Er, anyways… I am super excited also about the metallics and special effects paint from Resene – so cool.

I bought ‘infinity’ & ‘goldmine’ and am hopefully going to create a work of art with them!

Ive been feeling very inspired by all the metallic accents that are coming through in the fashion and interior design world at the moment. One thing I find my mind keeps thinking back to is this amazing metallic light shade which Lucy and saw when we were out being inspired on the Urbis Design Day

I just think they are the bees-knees! Online is a treasure trove of motivational madness for me. This morning for instance I came across this neat website which sells awesome homewares (Gretel), and that was through reading someone elses blog (this one: Design Love Fest, is a MUST read). Whenever I am in need of some inspiration, I go for a blog surf and see what sparks of creativness I can summon up!

I cant wait to share my creation with you once it is done, and hopefully I will continue to be motivated and inspired by all the wonderful, creative people I have surrounded myself with. I hope you also have cool creative nerds and supportive peeps that keep you inspired!

The weekend just gone was certainly one full of two things I love – friends and freebies!! My good friend Lucy and I attended the Urbis Design Day on Saturday just gone, and because we were both Design Day virgins, we both had no idea what to expect. I had been offered some work for the same day in the afternoon and thought surely 2 hours would be enough to get around and explore all that this day had to offer…. luckily the work was cancelled because boy, it took aloooot longer than anticipated, and I certainly wouldnt want to have rushed it!!

We started off the eventful day at the Mini Cooper shop in Newmarket, and was greeted with a free sandwich and drink (darn, wish I hadnt just bought that muffin and coffee!). We explored their creative displays which showcased their minis and brought new light to why each mini is special, and how you might see yourself in them. A great start to the day.

We then got shuttled off to the next exhibit at ECC lighting and furniture, where I was in lighting heaven. More pretty, unusual and ginormous lighting than you could shake a stick at! Here they had free Nespresso coffee on offer and the most delicious organic NZ icecream you could ask for – oob!! (I’ll take an extra one for later thanks…)

Now I was all jacked up on my second coffee of the day, off to the next place! We visited a bathroom show room, which aside from the free cheese didnt really standout and offer us anything too exciting, so into the shuttle and onto the next stop – Bo Concept.

This place was fuuuun! They had free wine, George fm cranking live and get this: a section that had a rack of top-of-the-line designer clothes, models, shoes and accessories and you got to design your own photo shoot where a professional photographer then took shots in a little photoshoot and gave you a copy of it!! Heaven!! Aside from the rather pushy stylist that was there (trying) to give direction, it was awesome, and such a brilliant idea.

After this one, we went up to Parnell and saw some of David Trubridge’s stunning lighting fixtures, which are always a pleasure to look at. He hails from one of my favourite places in my beautiful country, Havelock North. I love how his designs have such a natural look about them, yet have a really sophisticated and modern effect when dangling from the ceiling. After viewing these at Backhouse, we then jumped on the shuttle again which took us to our next destination where we went through a little maze to figure out what type of font we would be.

image

What font are you?

After so many eye catching and creative displays around, my eyes needed a wee rest after they had been so deliciously stimulated all day! Lucy and I had a wonderful day out together and were both thoroughly surprised at how amazingly well thought out and put together this event was. We would totally recommend it for next year!

P.S. check out Urbis Magazine here, well worth a look!

There is really nothing like stepping outside your door to pick fresh herbs and veges from your own garden to add to your dinner. I love being able to do this and am lucky that my partner let my dad build me one! I love watching plants grow, there something so satisfying about helping something grow – and then eating it all!!

Hopefully we have a few sunny days around the corner so I can pick some of the lettuce and basil and make a delicious salad!

Grow your own!

A recipe I had the pleasure of trying over Christmas was a parsley dressing. We had this over chicken and it was amaaaazing!! I found a similar recipe on this neat blog I just came across called veggieful.com. I havnt tried it yet but looks goooood. Even if your not a vegan, check out their website, looks like there are oodles of delicious recipes there that you could use as side dishes to go along with a meat main.

I love exploring the web and finding neat blogs, and I love it even more when cool blogs share links for other cool blogs. I am definitely going to try and incorporate this into my blogging from now on. Through one of the many links I clicked on while blog-surfing, I came across, get this, a restaurant alllll about mac n’ cheese!! Can you believe it! What an awesome place!

Trust America, but seriously, these two clever ladies have created this funky little place that has taken mac n’ cheese to a whole. nutha’. level.

I am so excited about going to Canada in October as while Im there I hope to make many trips down south into America and visit the West Coast and some of these neat places Im finding online.  Kieran and I are just going with the flow once we get to Canada and don’t really have any set plans, but this is one thing I definitely want to look into. Any places you can recommend to visit or where to stay on a budget?

I get so excited in anticipation of things to come that I sometimes forget to live in the now, and with all our travel plans now booked Im definitely getting that way again. I still have alot of exciting things that will happen before then, like graduating university, my nieces 2nd birthday and probably many other things Im not even aware of yet!
I just need to keep telling myself to sloooooow down and breathe. Enjoy what you have while you have it and dont wish the time away!

Have a great Tuesday! Before you know it, itll be Friday again… 😉

Tomorrow is my best friend Antonia’s birthday. I’m going to take her out for brunch in Mt. Eden tomorrow morning, although we have already started celebrating! She had a birthday dinner in town last night at an amazing restaurant called Monsoon Poon. They do amazing south east asian food, and it is always good!

image

Antonia (although I normally refer to her as Fay, see why here) has been my bestfriend for hmmm…. the last, 5 years I think, although we met when we were 16.

This is us on the bus on the way to the restaurant… can you believe she just turned 26…?? We are so mature.

BFFs

She currently works at a prestige clothing store called Witchery, so her wardrobe is full of beautiful garments! Plus she has a bit of an addiction/obsession with handbags and gorgeous shoes, so whenever I’m in need of a glam outfit, I shop at The House of Fay. I looove the outfit I wore last night, the colours, the sparkle…ohh, so pretty!! And with my new ‘white-witch’ hair colour, I feel like when I wear colours they have even more pop than usual! What do you think?

It’s true!! Well, I think so. I’ve never had any issues with my weight tho, so what would I know?
To be honest, I think eating right is common sense, but lets face it, who really has that much common sense these days? Or the time to plan ahead and make meals from scratch, and all the other excuses people come up with…

I havn’t been able to excercise for about the last 3 months, due to having a mole removed on my foot in a very inconvenient place, which it then took a rather long time to heal, and another little bit of minor surgery which has put me out of action for another 3 weeks. I really notice the changes in my body when I don’t exercise, and even more so when I don’t eat good food.

Ive got one more week before I am allowed to exercise again, so I’ve decided it’s time to start eating better again as well. I’m also trying to discover new foods or try foods I wouldn’t normally buy, different ways of cooking (or not = raw) and really try to be at one with natures foods. There’s the hippy in me coming out!

Here is a new recipe that my good friend Lucy gave me from the Revive Cafe Cookbook (which you can purchase here). It was suuuuch a delicious salad, and from what I saw when Lucy was showing me this recipe, it looks like one recipe book that would get alot of use in my house. I love recipes that have things that are either readily available, easy to find in your supermarket or even better, already in your cupboard!

Revive Raw Salad:

makes 6x 1 cup serves

Ingrediants:                                         Orange Dressing:
●1/2 cup sultanas                                  ●juice of 1 orange {or 1/2C of orange juice}
●2 medium beetroot                              ●2 T balsamic vinegar
●4 carrots                                               ●2 T honey or date puree
●10 mint leaves                                      ●1 t salt
●1/2 cup sunflower seeds                      ●4 T oil

1. Put the sultanas in some boiling water before you start to fattem them and make them juicy {worth doing!}
2. Grate the beetroot and carrots, by hand or food processor with grater attachment.
3. In a cup mix the orange dressing ingrediants.
4. Drain the water off the sultanas
5. Combine all ingrediants. Eat!

*i missed out the sunflower seeds for mine as they get caught in my braces like nobodys business!

Revive Raw Salad

I made this for my lunch today, and in record time I might add, as there was no cooking {raw food = check!}. Plus, I’ve never bought or prepared beetroot before {new foods = check!}, so it was cool to try these out. After my mum and I flew home from Wellington on Monday we stopped in at this awesome fruit and vege shop out by the airport. It’s one of those places where you can go and pick strawberries, or buy an ice cream fresh to order in a waffle cone made with frozen strawberries and vanilla ice cream {oh, sweet ice cream…♡}. They also grow all the fruit and vege there. I got so much for such a great price!

Here is another yuuuumo healthy and scrumdidilyumptious meal that I made for dinner last night:

image

Grilled Fish Taco

I love fish but struggle making other things with it besides the good ole’ Fish ‘n’ Chips! Im so glad I discovered this one in the January 2012 issue of Cusine. Didn’t realise it was an old copy – luckily for you they have the recipe on their website still {dinner tonight?!}

Because of my braces, I can’t snack on nuts, apples or carrot sticks drowning in hummus (waaaa) – but there is always good old fashioned fruit and yogurt!

Fruit and yogurt

I hope if your jumping on the “good eating” band wagon, this gives you some inspiration, or at least a new recipe or two. I always find when I tell myself I’m not allowed, or shouldnt eat something, I want it more, so everything in moderation I say. And use your common sense!!
